As we grow older, signs of aging begin to appear, which is a natural part of life. However, this doesn’t mean we have to look older than our actual age, and I have yet to meet a woman who desires that.
Typically, the face is where aging becomes most noticeable, but the health and style of your hair can also be a visual indicator of age. Through my work in the Hairstyles & Beauty industry, I’ve witnessed how an ill-suited hairstyle can add years to a woman’s appearance.
Collaborating with a stylist to find the perfect haircut and hair color can take years off your appearance and make you feel amazing.
As you reach your 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond, it’s common to prioritize being true to yourself over making a strong first impression. To truly achieve a fitting appearance, understanding your energy type is key.
General problems caused by hair maturation
As we age, our hair changes. Here are several common problems that typically affect mature women:
- Thinning: Thinning hair can lead to a loss of density or a widening of the part that you may need to cover with the right hairstyle.
- Lost Volume: Thin hair usually means less volume as well. Styles that once looked full and flattering with thick hair may no longer work for you as you age.
- Wispy strands: Fine hair (or thin hair) can also refer to the hair shaft (not the number of follicles), leading to wispy strands that are brittle and hard to control.
- Short haircuts: As we age, many women get hot flashes that make them want to keep their hair short. A short haircut can age you, but it doesn’t have to! There are all sorts of chic pixie and bob haircut options to help you look fashionable.
- Sagging skin: As skin loses elasticity, you don’t want a long hairstyle that could cause the face to slide down further.
- Limited mobility: Some hairstyles may be too difficult to maintain if you have difficulty with arm mobility.
- Gray hair: Your natural hair color may change, forcing you to choose between constant color appointments or your natural color.
There are many modern solutions to help you get the hair color and style you want. Youthful hairstyles over 50 don’t have to be a certain length or color. Just stay true to your beauty type and you won’t have to worry about finding the perfect style!
What should a mature woman’s hairstyle look like?
If you’re like me, you’ve spent too much time being told what you can and can’t do. “Curvy women can’t wear that,” “Older women shouldn’t look like that,” etc. But there are no real rules about how you age! The only real rule is to stay true to yourself.
As long as you use your appearance to convey your inner energy, you will feel your best. People will get a better sense of who you are from their first impression if your hairstyle reflects your energy type.
Ideally, your hairstyle will cross :
- Elegant
- Natural look
- Professional
- Fashionable
- Hassle free
- Beautiful
This could include a bold and shaggy cut, something edgy and sporty, a sophisticated and sexy look or a flowing and natural look.
